Vintage bunny

Bunny #6 made from vintage fabric that I just bought.

Busy Saturday

Darlink went to Sydney on Friday for work and is spending the weekend there. I entertained myself fully for today - did baking in the morning, shopping in the afternoon and started making a stuffed bunny in the evening.

Here is the recipe I tested out from the Macro Wholefoods newsletter.




Note that this didn't have any butter or oil in it. As such, it is a little dry but the dried cherries I used (in place of cranberries) added some bursts of flavour.



Met Charli in the afternoon for a walk to Brunswick Street and ended up at Red Tongue for lunch (at 3+ after a lot of stops along the way and Charli more than $100 poorer :D).



This is what we both ordered because it sounded so good but turned out a little small - puff pastry, asparagus, smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce.



After lunch, we crossed the road to Hunter Gatherer and found that they sell vintage fabric there! Of course I got some. A stuffed bunny is in the process of being churned out as I type this.

Happy Chinese New Year!

CNY is here again! Over here we haven't really felt any of the festive mood at all, unlike in Singapore where everything would have built up to somewhat of a frenzy over the past few days and people will stuff themselves silly over the next few more. When we went out this afternoon past Chinatown, there were stalls set up selling Chinese-y stuff, foodstuff and a stage for performances. But it was way too hot to be any fun. It was a scorcher of a day. On the brighter side, I have CNY goodies coming from Singapore courtesy of Charli who is bringing them from Mammo! :D

We had dinner with Johnny and his new housemate John (also). Heard firecrackers going off just now in Chinatown as well.

Made a new bunny today! This was made out of fleece that I bought so that Bobbi bunny could have something to play with as well :D

A nice evening out

After 3 days of working late, we made a special effort to get to the St Kilda Beach Night Market. This week is also when the St Kilda festival is happening so I thought there might be a little more festivities there.

We bought a nice cake and a cherry tart from the Monarch cake shop (for breakfast), had dinner at Grill'd and then went to take a look at the market.

There is a nice atmosphere at this market compared to others we have been to. There were performers, people and kids dancing to the music, people sitting on the lawns (or what was left of them) and the nice smell of hotdogs in the air. As the weather the past few days has been quite cool, it made for a really lovely stroll around.

Stalls there have a hippie feel to them - vintage clothing, handmade jewellery, leather goods, craft items, bags, tie-dyed stuff etc. There was even a drink stall selling chai!





I got a nice skirt/top/dress for $30.

A busy day!

Darlink went to watch the Australian Open today with his colleagues so I had to entertain myself for the day. Spent the afternoon baking a banana walnut & chocolate loaf and also made my first stuffed bunny. I am quite proud of that one! :D

Mission impossible?

Here you see Bobbi bunny sitting on the 3rd floor of her cage. She likes to sit here to get my attention and pokes her head out of the gap to get head rubs. We always thought she would not be able to get out through that gap because it only measures 8cm wide but just now she did! She was excitedly trying to follow me around in her cage and somehow leapt out through the space! Then she gleefully ran around the house...:S

Strawberry & almond tarts

Just tried out a new recipe I saw in the Sunday newspaper magazine. These looked really yummy and they are too when you eat them warm from the oven! :D The sides of the pastry didn't stay up like they were supposed to though. I think it was because my cutter was smaller than 8cm.

Ingredients:
* 1/4 cup almond meal
* 1 tablespoon plain flour
* 30g unsalted butter, melted
* 1/2 cup caster sugar
* 15 strawberries, hulled and halved
* 2 x 200g sheets ready-prepared shortcrust pastry, thawed
* unsalted butter, melted for brushing
* caster sugar, extra for sprinkling (optional)

Method - makes 10:
1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. Place the almond meal, flour, butter and 2 tablespoons of the sugar in a bowl and mix to combine.
2. Place the strawberries and remaining sugar in a bowl and toss to coat.
3. Use an 8cm cookie cutter to cut out 5 rounds from each of the pastry sheets.
4. Spread the pastry rounds with 1 teaspoon of the almond meal mixture and leaving a 2 cm border, top with three strawberry halves.
5. Fold up the sides to partially enclose the strawberries. Brush the pastry with butter and sprinkle with the extra sugar.
6. Place on a baking tray lined with non-stick baking paper and bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden.
