Attempting macarons

Thought I'd give this a try and I think it has turned out better than I expected, given my fear of not being able to get egg whites to the required consistency without a cake mixer. Also had no food colouring so this is not coloured but it is rosewater flavoured :)

There are only a couple that actually look like how it should but at least there are some...

A little skirt

Finally get to try sewing a tiny little skirt - I have no idea how small newborn babies can be!
I still think this is too large.

My first zipper closure skirt

I have been thinking for a while that A-line skirts cannot be that hard to sew so I decided to try and do one. This is how it turned out. A little bit wonky but still wearable :)

The zipper bit was tricky but I still managed to get it to work. And while an initial version didn't fit (!), the final one does now!

Bunny lace bag

I had to get this bunny lace when I saw it even though I didn't know what I would do with it. Bunny anything is always good. Today I made a bag out of it and here it is. =) I am quite proud of it.

A new bag

Tried out a new tutorial for handbag recently. I decided to use my favourite pieces of fabric from the collection I have amassed over the years! I really quite like the finished product :) It is reversible too!

Busy weekend

It's the CNY and Valentine's weekend and although we haven't got much festivities here, we did go to the city where there was a little bit of CNY atmosphere which was nice. There were lion dances going on around the shops at Chinatown and ear-drum bursting firecrackers going off. I seem to have accomplished quite a bit at home though.

Balsam flowers sprouting!

Made a simple skirt for me...

...and a new handphone pouch.

Tried out a sponge cake recipe with the rice cooker. This turned out a little like steamed cake. I know someone who will like this!

We also wanted to arrange a bunny date for Pixie with a bunny that needed a new home. But his owner eventually did not get back to me. So no bunny friend for her this time. I have been toying with the idea of getting her a companion but the thought of what if they don't get along does make me a little hesitant. I thought perhaps that was a sign that I wasn't ready yet :P

Another hot hot day!

We've got another terribly hot day today. From the morning, the temperature has been climbing steadily up - it is now 45 degrees! Bobbers is in the cool safety of the toilet and we are holed up at home doing art and craft! Hehehe! We have our market stall tomorrow - luckily the temperature will be normal then.

Update to weather: -
The temperature has dropped 15 degrees in less than half an hour! What exciting weather we have here! Strong winds around though.

My first zipper!

My first attempt at sewing something with a zipper! I have only been visualizing how to do it in my head so far and I've finally put pen to paper (or needle to cloth in this case). It doesn't seem too bad though :)

White Chocolate Cherry Brownie

With Christmas around the corner, there are so many cake and cookie recipes in the newspapers. I decided to test out one yesterday.

Ingredients: -
* 185g white chocolate
* 150g chopped unsalted butter
* 1 cup caster sugar
* 1-1/4 cups plain flour
* 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
* 3 lightly beaten eggs
* 100g roughly chopped glace cherries

Method: -
Preheat oven to 170C. Line a 20cm (base measurement) square cake pan with non-stick baking paper.

Place white chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan half-filled with simmering water (make sure the bowl does not touch the water). Use a metal spoon to stir occasionally until the chocolate melts and is smooth, then set aside to cool.

Place flour, sugar and baking powder in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre and add eggs and the chocolate mixture. Fold in the cherries until just combined. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan.

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out slightly sticky. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

It turned out quite yummy! :D

Earl Grey Tea loaf with vine fruits

I tried this recipe today. Saw it in the newspapers last week and because there's tea in it, I thought I'd try it out.

Ingredients:
* 300ml boiling water
* 3 Earl Grey tea bags
* 125g soft brown sugar
* 2-1/2 cups mixed dried vine fruits (currants, raisins or sultanas) - I used raisins, dried cherries and currants
* 2 eggs, whisked
* 2-1/2 cups self-raising flour
* Finely grated zest and juice of 1 orange (I used an organic orange because I don't like grating zest of conventional oranges)
* 1/2 cup chopped unblanched almonds
* 2 tbsp honey

Method:
Pour water over the tea bags in a large heat-proof bowl and leave for 5 mins. Remove tea bags, add the sugar and stir to dissolve. Add the vine fruit, stir and stand for at least 1 hour (or overnight).

Preheat oven to moderate (I used approximately 180 degrees). Line a 24cm x 11cm loaf pan with baking paper.

Add the eggs, flour, orange zest and juice to the fruit mixture. Beat well. Spoon mixture into the pan and smooth the top. Sprinkle with almonds and bake about 1 hour or until a skewer comes out clean.

Cool in the pan in a rack for 10 mins. While it's cooling, warm the honey slightly and drizzle over the top of the loaf. Serve thinly sliced (I skipped the honey bit though).

The end product is like a fruit bread and I like it because there is no butter involved. I don't seem to be able to taste the tea anymore though. It seems like the orange zest might have overpowered it maybe because my orange was too large?? But on the whole, I'm quite pleased with the outcome because the loaf rose really nicely and tastes healthy and good.
